SCIENTIST

Known worldwide as The Scientist Dubmaster, Hopeton Brown is one of the most innovative and influential figures in reggae and dub. Emerging from Kingston’s legendary King Tubby’s Studio in the late 1970s, he transformed the mixing console into an instrument of its own, reshaping sound through deep basslines, spatial echoes and hypnotic reverb.

Scientist is a Jamaican dub producer, recording engineer, and mixer who became one of the defining figures of Jamaican dub in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Working closely with King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Channel One’s sound system, he helped push dub toward increasingly experimental use of echo, reverb, bass, and studio effects. His influential albums include Scientist Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires and Scientist Wins the World Cup, which helped establish his distinctive, effects-heavy sound.
