RAqS is a collective of event planners/makers with a mission to empower underground and contemporary arts, presenting live shows and audiovisual performances fused in club and festival culture, full of Levantine (Ash-Shaam) chants, rhythms from the MENA region and abroad, Tarab music and Andalusian classics - in ambient and electronic music styles.

As part of their first new artists' residency show, RAqS present Electro Tarab Classical String Trio, Haykal and a surprise DJ set. Warming this winter night with an electronic and classical mash-up of heavy beats, distorted strings and lots of bass, the Electro Tarab Classical String Trio will re-imagine Hello Psychaleppo's top and unreleased tracks. Bringing his freestyle lyrical approach to Amsterdam for the first time, Ramallah-based Palestinian rapper and electronic music producer Haykal utilises grime, rap and other music genres to contemplate the social reality of his roots, city and surroundings.

Line-up

Electro Tarab Classical String Trio

The first show of the new artists' residency by RAqS with Hello Psychaleppo (music producer/visual artist) and Basilious Alawad (composer/cellist) together with Vashka (violinist) and Sadra Fayyaz (violinist and violist). This electronic and classical mash-up of heavy beats, distorted strings and lots of bass will re-imagine the top tracks of Hello Psychaleppo along with unreleased ones.

Haykal

Ramallah-based Palestinian rapper and electronic music producer Haykal reflects the social reality about his roots, city and his surroundings in a freestyle lyrical approach referring to diversity in slangs as a way to communicate with various communities from the region through grime, rap and other music genres.

Hello Psychaleppo

Hailing from one of the most mystical and musically rich cities in the Levant, Hello Psychaleppo is deeply rooted in oriental music tradition. Drawing from melodies of the Arab Bedouin “Mawwals” and the ecstatic strains of Tarab threaded through convoluted, industrial structures made from dubstep, drum & bass, electro and trip-hop. Creating a journey away from boundaries of style, he engages souls into letting go while experiencing a new dimension of sonic blends.

Basilius Alawad

Syrian composer and cellist based in Berlin whose music style covers a variety of genres including: film scoring, modern Arabic music influenced by a contemporary approach, and electro acoustic music. Currently completing his Master's of Film Music Composition at the Babelsberg Filmuniversität under award-winning composers as Jörg Iwer, Ulrich Reuter and Karim Sebastian Elias.

Sadra Fayyaz

Tehran born and Berlin based violinist and violist focusing his research on the socio-political history of the Middle East. After obtaining his National Diploma at the Conservatory of Boulogne-Billancourt at the age of 22, he won the 1st and the special prize at the Concours National des Jeunes Altistes in Paris. During the Corona pandemic, Sadra started a Master's degree at the Freie Universität Berlin in the department of “Geschichts und Kulturwissenschaften".

Vashka

Berlin-based member of the Divan orchestra, studying the viola with Yulia Deyneka and chamber music with Krzysztof Chorzelski at the Barenboim Said Akademie. Born in a family of musicians, Vashka began the violin at the Tehran conservatory of music with Ebrahim Lotfi. At the age of 17, he moved to France to further his studies. Upon obtaining his Master's degree in 2018, Vashka moved to Berlin to study with Mihaela Martin at the Barenboim Said Akademie in a 2-year artist diploma program. Constantly seeking to broaden his knowledge, Vashka has a strong passion for both chamber music's philosophy and the musical universe made possible by it.
